Aberdeen FC v Dundee ( Match Report )
The Dons faced Dundee at Pittodrie tonight in the second round of the Scottish communities league cup. I was sat in the main stand and Todders was pretty empty but I guess that's to be expected on a Tuesday night and with a lack of form. Aberdeen lined up in a 4-4-2 formation and Craig brown opted to play players out of position again. The Aberdeen fans are dying to see there great club go on a cup run and bring some silverware back to Pittodrie and that started tonight.Let's hope we can get the job done this year and earn a spot back in Europe.
Jason Brown started in goal for the Dons with a back four of Andy Considine, Kari Arnason, Ryan Jack and captain Ricky foster. The Aberdeen midfield consisted of Chris Clarke who made his first start since rejoining the Dons, Fraser Fyvie, Issac Osbourne and Peter Pawlett. In attack was Josh Magennis and Darren Mackie. The Aberdeen bench included Scott Vernon, David Gonzalez, Rory McArdle, Youll Mawene and new signing Mohamed Chalali who flew in from Greece this morning.
The Dons got off to a great start and were playing the ball about nicely, Peter Pawlett was creating havoc down the wings and big Josh was putting pressure from the outset on the Dundee defence. The big Welshman's strength seemed to be to much for the first division outfit. Kari Arnason was again outstanding and showed his quality and experience while playing out of position in the Dons defence. I was also impressed with the first full competitive appearance of Jason brown who was very vocal and organised the defence well. he also had a number of good saves when he was called upon and I think he may have a shot at gaining the number 1 jersey.
The dons broke the deadlock on the 17th minute when Peter Pawlett showed great speed and awareness to cut the ball back to Clarke who then found Mackie who did well to turn and tuck it away. Aberdeen went close a number of other times in the opening spell and looked very comfortable and went in 1-0 at half time. At the start of the second half the dons received a blow when Kari Arnason had to go off after picking up a knock to his leg. Arnason was replaced by Mawene and not long after that Clarke had to be replaced by Chalali.
The Dons did have two other goals disallowed from big Josh Magennis and also captain Ricky Foster. Mohamed Chalali only arrived in the country this morning but when he came on he got in to some great positions, showed good composure on the ball and almost got a goal on his debut. I think he will be a useful player for the dons this season and I think he will be a far better player than Maguire. My report has made it sound as if it was a walk in the park but it was far from that. Towards the end of the first half and for most of the second Dundee passed the ball around well and did create some chances. The second half was a nervy one to watch as a Dons fan as Aberdeen took the foot off the pedal and resorted to long balls with little success. Even though we made it harder than it should have been we still managed to scrap a victory which is something we have struggled to do in recent years. Now that we have 2 wins in a row and are scoring goals the rangers game on Sunday will be a good test for my beloved Aberdeen fc.
Let's look forward to the next round of the cup and let's hope we can carry on our winning form and start to climb the league table. COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!
