Aberdeen v Celtic Match Report
Compared to the Aberdeen team of last season who received constant thrashings from Celtic, this was a much improved performance. The Dons were still without Chris Clarke, Fraser Fyvie and Youll Mawene but looked very comfortable defensively. Rory McArdle lined up in the defence with big Andy Considine, Kari Arnason and captain Ricky Foster. In goal for the dons was Colombian keeper David Gonzalez who looked confident and assured. He had quite a few good saves and read the game well and he also showed a great bit of skill turning Stakes in the box. We haven't really seen him tested yet but I think he will help the Dons defence stay calm.
Although the Dons defence was a makeshift one they coped extremely well with any pressure Celtic had to throw at them. The one goal didn't come from Celtic until the 73rd minute which shows a huge improvement to last season. The Aberdeen midfield consisted of ex Coventry player Issac Osbourne, Rob Milsom, Peter Pawlett and Big Josh Magennis. The midfield also showed some good defensive traits and the odd flash of creative flair but not quite enough to produce any goals. The few chance the Dons did have showed that we are more than capable of competing, I think now is the time for manager Craig Brown to demand money for a creative front man. With a little bit of something going forward we could have sneaked three points off of Celtic today.
Carrying on the positive note,a great performance from Pawlett along with comfortable contributions from Low and megginson when they came off the bench were encouraging. Pawlett did have to go off but let's hope it's not to serious because he can help alot with the creativity if he can stay fit. It is nice to see a wide range off young talent coming through for the Dons but we need to keep them fit and not pile to much pressure on them.
I won't say anything bad about the performance today because I thought in general that every player had a descent game. Slightly to much giving the ball away and a lack of creativity can be solved with one morale boosting signing. We have a good backbone and a descent enough squad to challenge for Europe but we need to hit the goal trail soon to kick start our season.
