4-4 Cracker At Pittodrie
Aberdeen went in to Saturdays tie the underdogs but what unfolded was the best performance of the season from a determined dons side. Aberdeen fielded the same side that drew 2-2 with Hibs on Wednesday night contrary to media speculation that Mark McGhee would field a weaker side.It didn't take long for Celtic to take the lead with only 2 minutes gone, soon after a lovely piece of play from Aberdeen lead to Michael Paton belting a stunning strike past Artur Boruc. Aberdeen looked the most likely to go and take the lead at that point but a hurried free kick from Jim Patterson allowed Celtic to go on the counter attack and take a 1-2 lead.
The dons didn't lay down and kept pressing to equalise, the constant pressure was rewarded with a well taken goal from Darren Mackie to send the dons in at half time 2-2. When the second half kicked off the game had lost a little bit of tempo but it soon picked up again and the game started to open up. The dons then went behind again from poor defending which lead to Robbie Keane grabbing a flook header.
The next goal from Mcgeedy put Celtic 2-4 up and the dons could of lay down and let the game go. This certainly wasn't the case as the dons kept up the gritty battle. Aberdeen won a penalty with about 10 minutes left and Steven Maclean made no mistake and hammered it in to the top right hand corner and the game was back on. Aberdeen should have had at least one more penalty but it was not to be. The pressure continued for the dons and Maclean popped up again to hammer home a Darren Mackie pass from close range to make it 4-4. Celtic then went down to ten men to complete the slap in the face before a standing ovation at the final wistle for the dons players.
In my opinion this was the best I have seen the dons play all season and it should fill us all with hope going in to Tuesday night fifth round cup tie against Raith Rovers at Pittodrie. Lets hope the Aberdeen attack can carry on the good form shown in the last 2 games.
